The other suspect on the newly install PC are: Intel Control Center Intel Management Engine components Intel SDK for OPen CL -- CPU Only Runtime Package if it's not because of me switching from IDE to AHCI, what else could cause this? The entire PC is brand new. In the case of AHCI you boot Windows in IDE mode and there's a registry edit to enable msahci driver then you reboot and switch to AHCI and it should work

The problem is that if you installed Windows in IDE mode (ie you didn't use F6 and supply a driver disk), then simply changing the BIOS setting to AHCI mode and rebooting will cause Windows to fail and will require a repair install. Hope someone finds this useful - I wanted to do this as I needed AHCI mode to dual boot Linux and I didn't have a floppy drive on the machine to allow me to install Windows XP in AHCI mode

How to: Change SATA Modes After Windows Installation

Does not RAID stand for Redundant Array of Independent Disks instead of inexpensive? I ask this becasuse 3TB drives can be used in a RAID array and they are NOT inexpensive lol, I think you can say both as time has moved on it is more referred to as independent rather than inexpensive. There are four main factors of a RAID setup: striping, which spreads data across multiple drives, mirroring, which copies the data to more than one disk, space efficiency, which is how much of the total space is available to use, and fault tolerance, which is a measure of how well protected the RAID array is against disk failure
