These can be used to upgrade your estus flasks by talking to a fire keeper (there's one in the cave below the bonfire in Firelink.) You can actually do this right now if you want, by taking the elevator opposite the doorway you came in through to Firelink. Whatever, head across the bridge and up the stairs to get a divine ember, which you can give to the blacksmith in the Parish so that he can make you divine weapons
Then go through the door and kill all of the phantoms in the area (not required but you get a lot of souls as its the best soul grinding spot in the game). Forgive him after he kicks you in the ditch (pick up the Skull Lantern in front of you since it makes the Tomb of the Giants less of a pain), exhaust his dialogue, and kill Nito to make him move to Firelink
I really, really hope Namco continues to bring these titles to the PC, as far as I know this game sold relatively well, well enough to justify the port at least. I would never expect the default keyboard layout for a game like this to work well without rebinding things so the actions make intuitive sense and you can for sure do everything without, say, needing your pinky to cover four different important keys
