proc(5) - Linux manual page

  http://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man5/proc.5.html
It is used by free(1) to report the amount of free and used memory (both physical and swap) on the system as well as the shared memory and buffers used by the kernel. Prior to Linux 2.6.28, SELinux did not allow threads within a multi- threaded process to set their security context via this node as it would yield an inconsistency among the security contexts of the threads sharing the same memory space

In fact, getopts will not process arguments without the prefixed -, and will terminate option processing at the first argument encountered lacking them. The getopts template differs slightly from the standard while loop, in that it lacks condition brackets. The getopts construct is a highly functional replacement for the traditional getopt external command. While the child process is doing its work, the parent process is still executing.Note that while a parent process gets the process ID of the child process, and can thus pass arguments to it, the reverse is not true

Installing Oracle 9i on Red Hat Linux (RHEL 4, 3, 2.1, RH 9, 8.0, 7.3, 7.2, 7.1) x86 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Server, RHEL AS, Oracle9i Database Installation)

NOTE: If you do not have enough swap space or RAM during the Oracle installation, in particular during the database creation, your Oracle server (Linux) will temporarily become unresponsive to any events for several minutes. For more information on shared memory segments, see Determining Which Semaphore Sets and Shared Memory Segments Belong to Each Oracle Database or Instance

Installing PHP and the Oracle 11g Instant Client for Linux and Windows

If the database is local then Instant Client, although convenient and still usable, is generally not needed because OCI8 can directly use the database libraries. However, if you don't wish to recompile PHP, more recent, unsupported RPM packages for Oracle Linux are available from oss.oracle.com, or via Unbreakable Linux Network updates

Shaw quoted :- In the past, if you linked in a normal .LIB file, then you had linked in every function that was contained in that file, whether you used them are not. You can use the WinObj object viewer (Google for it) to view all hardware device objects, driver objects and other objects currently existing in your system

I usually do this with the init command: su - root init 3 init 5 If you are using telnet, however, you will have to set DISPLAY manually, see my other article Starting runInstaller for more information. Setting Oracle Environments Since the Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) "runInstaller" is run from the oracle account, some environment variables must be configured for this account before OUI is started

Note that the init system itself is not doing the heavy-lifting: that is left up to each service itself (!) This summary is worth considering carefully as the distinction between the two types of system is subtle but important. The problem is that we have provided the value to the instance variable, but we haven't named the instance variable that the given value corresponds to

proc(5): process info pseudo-file system - Linux man page

  http://linux.die.net/man/5/proc
It is used by free(1) to report the amount of free and used memory (both physical and swap) on the system as well as the shared memory and buffers used by the kernel. When the value in this file is 1, symbolic links are followed only in the following circumstances: * the file system UID of the process following the link matches the owner (UID) of the symbolic link (as described in credentials(7), a process's file system UID is normally the same as its effective UID); * the link is not in a sticky world-writable directory; or * the symbolic link and and its parent directory have the same owner (UID) A system call that fails to follow a symbolic link because of the above restrictions returns the error EACCES in errno

An Introduction to Linux Shell Scripting for DBAs

  http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/linux/saternos-scripting-088882.html
For example, a recovery script that involves the selection of a backed-up control file might prompt the user to make a selection that will be used later in the script to restore the file. To determine inventory location, you are going to pipe the results of the cat command (which displays the contents of the file) to grep (a utility that prints lines that match a given pattern)

We've specified a high priority (low cardinal number) in this module because a message with the default priority might not show on the console, depending on the kernel version you are running, the version of the klogd daemon, and your configuration. For example, if a process gets destroyed because your driver dereferenced a NULL pointer, the driver won't be able to close the device, and the usage count won't fall back to zero

If the modified program normally reads commands interactively when run, you must cause it, when started running for such interactive use in the most ordinary way, to print or display an announcement including an appropriate copyright notice and a notice that there is no warranty (or else, saying that you provide a warranty) and that users may redistribute the program under these conditions, and telling the user how to view a copy of this License. crontab(5): tables for driving cron - Linux man page

  http://linux.die.net/man/5/crontab
When using multiple security levels and roles, this may not be sufficient, because the same user may be running in a different role or at a different security level. Command output is mailed to the crontab owner (BSD can't do this), can be mailed to a person other than the crontab owner (SysV can't do this), or the feature can be turned off and no mail will be sent at all (SysV can't do this either)

The entire process is implemented with references and jump tables that isolate each protocol, most of which are set up during initialization when the computer boots. When the socket makes a connection (whether or not this involves traffic with the other end) the IP layer determines the route to the distant host and stores that information in the socket

without the "nolock" option) an RPC call to the "portmap" deamon will be attempted which is required to start a lockd kernel thread which is necessary if you want to use file locking on the NFS filesystem. Thank you for reading this post! Hopefully you learned a few tips and tricks along the way, as well as how to achieve a specific scenario that is not fully covered out of the box with System Center

Do they actually WANT people to use Java? If so it seems to me that if they provided instructions such as these along with the downloads that it would help their product get out a great deal.Oh well

Note that individual packages in the distribution are updated separately from the DLL so the Cygwin DLL version is not useful as a general Cygwin release number. This includes observations about web pages, setup questions, questions about where to find things, questions about why things are done a certain way, questions about the color preferences of Cygwin developers, questions about the meaning of the number 42, etc

linux - Can a shell script set environment variables of the calling shell? - Stack Overflow

  http://stackoverflow.com/questions/496702/can-a-shell-script-set-environment-variables-of-the-calling-shell
The main advantage here is that you can maintain the environment in one language and rely on "Environment Modules" to translate it to sh, ksh, bash, csh, tcsh, zsh, python (?!?!!), etc. Additionally, modulefiles allow your environment to reflect version dependencies: if you need need to change to version 3 from version 4 of a tool, instead of resetting all your env vars manually, you can just module swap and everything changes over
