We were told that we would want to fill our water tank at the dump station (kind of off-putting, to be honest) but found the potable water area clean and at a reasonable distance from the dump station. Before hiking into a backcountry campsite or shelter we suggest you check the Great Smoky Mountains national park trail conditions report to make sure the trail is open and for any special warnings such as for unusual black bear activity, water issues or safety hazards. Reservations for Cataloochee Valley in North Carolina must be made before entering the park as there are no telephones and cellular service is limited at best
