Why Star Trek V: The Final Frontier Deserves More Respect
These characters interactions have always been one of the praised elements of the Original Series and this film really exploits the chemistry between the three. Right from the beginning when the three are on shore leave together to the climax on Sha-Ka-Ree, the dynamic is really well written and you get some classic moments between them; most notably McCoy who has some brilliant one liners

He is the master of taking something which is ordinary, unremarkable or downright poor and making it appear like the Second Coming of compulsive viewing. While the best Trek films were properly plotted and ended on a strong and resonant note, this gradually unspools into a series of incoherent and frankly boring battle scenes
I still think its a pretty basic and generic concept overall but I guess the original TV series had both action based plots and thinking based plots to cover all angles. I think the effects team struggled throughout with this movie as you can see various methods used to create the entire illusion which kinda looks like a muddle at times
