My favorite time to go is wintertime because then is when all the animals come out and about more (come down closer to see), like the sheep, wolves, bears, etc

Chicago is a huge airport with little connection time allowed and it is touch and go whether you make your connection and we have had better luck with Newark

If you are hikers, you can do the whirlwind driving tour of Yellowstone in 2 or 3 days and then hike the backcountry in the Tetons for the scenery and solitude
