If you're thinking of joining the world of canyoneering, be ready to lug a wetsuit up steep mountains, swim in dirty-ice cold water, climb up and down boulders and other obstacles, scale slick rocks and learn the technical skill and rope work required for rappelling and getting yourself through a canyon. Bo Beck, a veteran on Zion's high angle Search and Rescue Team, has wrote the canyoneering reports on this site that are in and around Zion National Park

Thunderstorms do start to show themselves in August, so come prepared, but temperatures stay in the low seventies, which makes perfect weather for being outdoors. Sunny days can quickly turn ugly, and a cold wind can come from the mountains at any time, so be ready to remove and put on layers as needed throughout the day

How would the weather be in the begining days of October? I have seen posts on this forum that suggested Bryce would be cold, but wanted to understand if that would be the case in early October itself?
Best day hikes in Zion National Park, Utah
http://www.philarmitage.net/zion_hikes.html
Having done this hike twice though - and watched many people turn back at the narrowest section - it's clearly not a place for anyone afraid of heights! The lefthand photo below shows the crux (it's much steeper but also less exposed further up) - if even the photo makes you uneasy I'd recommend hiking instead the Observation Point trail on the other side of the canyon, which is similarly scenic (and even more strenuous) but less vertiginous. Orderville Canyon can be explored for some distance itself, but although it's also an impressively narrow (and much drier) gorge it's not nearly as interesting or photogenic as the main canyon

is about my favorite month for Zion....with the exception of mid winter when the ranger at the entrance has only one car in line (us) to chat with, homemade doggie treats to share with our pooch, the sun is soft in the brilliant blue sky, a good nip to the air that encourages hiking, the majestic red canyon walls have a dusting of snow and the bare trees show their interesting skeletons, along the river path.
