However, during the clean install, a folder will be created called windows.old, which contains the previous installation's files, including data files, which, if you don't have a backup of them are recoverable from it. System Restore in Windows Vista and Windows 7 has the ability to roll back to a previous version of an installed application, which the version used by Windows XP cannot do

If one is still skeptical and would want to stick to 32bits, then I would advise not to waste money on the extra GB of RAM, 2 to 3 GB shud be enough for your machine. Why push for 64-bit now anyway? The performance gains promised by 64-bit will not be seen for years until 64-bit compiled versions of software is the norm

In fact, if you look closely at your network setting, you'll find you can't even make IE 64-bit your default Web browser even if you wanted to! As Eric Law of Microsoft explained a while back, "This was an explicit choice made by the IE team, which may change at some point in the future. This might cause some problems." What problems besides IE 9's 64-bit's poor performance compared to other browsers? The big one is that it's not compatible with some browser add-ons

I will test it for some time and I might even consider adding more memory, so I can run a virtal machine without a fear of performance issues Geoff and Remko, nice work. magicT00n August 20th, 2011 at 12:44 79 It is worth to note, that some older Mainboard chipsets, just can not do this, they are limited to 3+ GB by Hardware, like certain intel chipset (mobile 845 and others i believe, i have this issue on Sony Napa based Notebooks for instance)

What do you have to look forward to if you make the leap? Here are some of the enormous benefits to making the jump to a 64-bit system: You can rock radically more RAM. Although you may only double the physical amount of RAM in your machine it will feel like way more than that because of the new efficiency of your system

So if you want to boost your performance while keeping your budget under your control, adding lots of RAM is the way to go, and 64-bit Window 7 Ultimate edition can use up to 192 GB of RAM if your system's motherboard can hold that much. When Windows Vista became available in early 2007, it boasted much improved third-party 64-bit driver support, and some organizations who decided to deploy Vista chose to deploy an x64 edition instead of an x86 version to take advantage of the ability of 64-bit Windows to run more applications at the same time and to use more than the 3 GB of RAM that 32-bit Windows is capable of using
How to Enable, Use and Support 4GB or More Physical RAM Memory in 32-bit Windows Vista - Tip and Trick

Windows Server 2008 Enterprise or Datacenter x86 edition supports up to 64GB of physical memory, a far higher limit comparing with paltry 4GB limit imposed on x86 Windows Vista. On some system, there may be activation issue (such as require to activate Windows Vista again) after replacing the files with the copy from Windows Server 2008

However, in some cases installing this patch on 4 GB systems will also lead to an increase in available memory (which may not necessarily result in performance improvement). Most security products will identify these patches as malicious since they modify the Windows kernel....This patch will allow the OS to use more than 4 GB of memory
Which bit OS(32-bit or 64bit OS) is better for 4GB of RAM Solved - Windows 7 Help Forums
http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/326363-bit-os-32-bit-64bit-os-better-4gb-ram.html
The reason for this is that many applications assume that they will never be given a memory address above 2 GB and will react in unpredictable ways if this should happen. So the answer depends on how many data intensive applications you need to run at the same time and you need 64bit applications on a 64bit system to make use of 4Gb+ RAM

The other thing you need are the kernel patch to remove 3.xgb ram limit by microsoft, those who are like me that have 4GB ram but windows 7 32bit only see 3.2GB ram usable, can use the patch to fully utilized full 4GB ram, just make sure your motherboard bios detect the correct full 4GB or 8GB of your system ram. In short, the real benefit of IA-64 was that what would normally be done in the pipeline of a modern X86 processor was done at compile time on an Itanium processor
memory - How can I enable PAE on Windows 7 (32-bit) to support more than 3.5 GB of RAM? - Super User
http://superuser.com/questions/52275/how-can-i-enable-pae-on-windows-7-32-bit-to-support-more-than-3-5-gb-of-ram
This is because your default kernel is not modified; a new one is copied to your system folder, and an additional boot menu option is added to boot Windows with the new, patched kernel instead of the older one. There are still many hardware devices that will not work in a 64 bit world, and need the real time access to make them work well (while there are accelerators that help with real time access, it can still present problems.) So, while 64 bit is technically superior, 32 bit is a legacy that will take a while go away, and there will be plenty of reason why people would like to access memory through PAE
Enable More Than 4GB RAM In Windows Vista and 7 32 Bit
http://www.pallab.net/2009/12/30/enable-more-than-4gb-memory-in-windows-vista-7/
However, in some cases installing this patch on 4 GB systems will also lead to an increase in available memory (which may not necessarily result in performance improvement). So, where did the remaining memory go?As it turns out, chunks of your RAM are reserved for various purposes and are not available to the operating system
